The Korea Research Institute of Decommissioning (KRID) hosted the “2025 Workshop for the Nuclear Decommissioning Competitiveness Enhancement Program” from October 29 to 30, 2025, at the Changwon Convention Center (hereinafter “Decommissioning Workshop”).

This workshop has been organized annually by KRID since 2023 for field-oriented R&D projects. In its third year, the 2025 workshop was held in cooperation with the Korean Nuclear Society during the 2025 KNS Autumn Conference. Within the conference, KRID led the programs funded by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment (formerly the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy), while the National Research Foundation of Korea managed the programs under the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The workshop began with an award ceremony recognizing contributions to the advancement of the nuclear decommissioning industry.

Following the ceremony, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) presented “Current Status and Future Plans for the Decommissioning of Kori Unit 1 and Wolsong Unit 1.” The Korea Radioactive Waste Agency introduced “Management Strategies for Radioactive Waste from Nuclear Decommissioning,” and ORANO delivered a presentation on “International Experiences in Nuclear Decommissioning,” providing insights into global and domestic decommissioning trends and challenges.

R&D project leaders also shared updates on their research progress and future plans. Active discussions among industry, academia, and research institutions are expected to enhance project completeness and improve the field applicability of developed technologies and equipment.

Choi Hoon, Program Director at the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), stated,

“We hope that the feedback raised during the Q&A sessions will be actively reflected in each project’s implementation so that the final outcomes can be effectively applied in real-world decommissioning sites.”
