The Korea Research Institute of Decommissioning (KRID)

Established in 2020, the Korea Research Institute of Decommissioning (KRID) is the first of its kind in Korea dedicated to decommissioning nuclear power plants (NPPs). As Korea’s early NPPs reach the end of their lifetime, there emerges critical demands for decommissioning technologies. KRID was established to pioneer the technologies for safe and effective decommissioning of NPPS and restoration of NPP sites to natural conditions, thereby completing the entire lifecycle of clean nuclear power generation.

To meet these goals, KRID is focusing its efforts on demonstrating and fostering technological solutions for cutting of activated structures and equipment, chemical/physical decontamination of nuclear power systems, characterization of decommissioning wastes, and restoration of decommissioning sites, etc.

Through these efforts, KRID further aims to support continuous development of the energy industry, to enhance public safety and environmental protection, to revitalize the decommissioning industry ecosystem and to assist Korean businesses to find opportunities in the global NPP decommissioning market.

KRID has signed multiple MoUs with many relevant organizations and is preparing for the successful launch of the first NPP decommissioning project in Korea through industry-government-academics partnership and technology exchange. To further enhance technological competitiveness, we are pursuing global cooperation by forging cooperative networks with global institutions and engaging in international technology exchanges and joint research initiatives.
